Some say that size doesn’t matter. I’ve met very few women who will agree with such nonsense. They will state that it is a misnomer, intended only to placate inadequate husbands, poorly proportioned boyfriends, and temporary playmates.
Women know how little confidence most men have. That their delusions of power, strength and masculinity, are imagined, that the male underbelly consists of insecurity. Men essentially live in terror of us- “The Fairer Sex.”
Rest assured that this editorial will soon lead to a literary and algebraic proof regarding book length. We are all aware of the discipline involved to write Japanese poetry (haiku, tanka, all that Bonzi stuff), and how these forms were once very pure. For Centuries it has been a struggle to maintain non-diluted empirical Japanese traditional and ethical form.
As bloodshed and war brought East and West together, reconstruction and opportunistic economics allowed academic and cultural curiosity. Naturally, differences in art and culture were discovered, stolen, exchanged, and then assimilated, diluted, marketed and commercialized.
By the last decade of the twentieth century, JapaneseLiterary Scholars were referring to contemporary (American English) Haiku, Tanka, and other Bonzi forms as Cowboy Haiku, Tanka, etc. This, of course, opened the door to ultra-neo, hybrid, and single-line forms. Even single-word haiku became popular. I’m not knocking it; I’ve seen a lot of my own clever sentences published so.
It’s a novelty thing. It gets your name out there and doesn’t cost much. Unfortunately, poetry pays nothing. What’s more, like most books, you can pay to have it published, only to find 473 copies left in your mother’s basement years later.
Ah, but returning to the topic at hand: “What’s the longest book you’ve ever read?” Having read so many books in my life, you might expect me to have a clever response. Does this question really deserve an answer? Who counts pages when they’re reading? Or bothers to write down word totals in an Excel file?
Sounds kind of silly to me. Here is where size truly doesn’t matter. Content matters, subject matters, authors matter. Think of what a book gives to you, how it moves you, where it sits in your heart. How it forever becomes a part of you. Stuff like that.
Counting words is for AI and free apps. Not a task for those who read. Don’t bother with numbers. Write yourself some third rate, one-line cowboy haiku!
